I’m an award-winning writer, editor, publishing consultant, and writing coach with a publishing career spanning 20 years. My blog, Adventures in Indie Publishing, is a resource for creative writers of all kinds.
As a blogger, I offer tips, tricks, and advice to aspiring writers seeking to improve their craft. I also provide insights into the current state of the publishing industry.
My poetry and short fiction have appeared in literary journals such as The Backporch Review, The Harbinger, Idiom, and Venture. My poetry has also appeared in the anthologies The Golden Treasury of Great Poems and Dance on the Horizon, and I am a two-time winner of the Golden Poet Award from World of Poetry Press. I recently published two novellas, Hedge King in Winter and A Merchant’s Tale, my first novel, The Romance of Eowain, and I’m currently at work on the fourth and fifth books in my Matter of Manred Saga, The Wedding of Eithe, and Heron Cry.
With a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature and Writing, a Master’s Degree in English Language and Literature, and a summer seminar at Cornell University’s elite School of Criticism and Theory, I have a formidable understanding of the art and mechanics of literature and poetry.
Through two-year apprenticeships with the Ventura Fiction Writers Group, the LA Writer’s Lab, and the Tribe Writers, I have a strong foundation in the elements of fiction, creative non-fiction, blogging, and screenwriting.
Whether as a workshop leader, a personal writing coach, or a speaker at literary engagements, I teach, support, and promote creative writing to aspiring authors with kindness, compassion, and humor.
I am the author of the fantasy novellas, Hedge King in Winter and A Merchant’s Tale, and the full-length novel The Romance of Eowain, heroic action-adventures for the discriminating reader of new digital and print fantasy literature. With my graduate education in literature and writing, my experience in the publishing industry as a digital editorial production and design professional, and my love of fantasy literature, I practice what I preach in my online courses in creative writing: discipline, integrity, commitment, and imagination. Be transported into the Medieval Celtic Fantasy of the Matter of Manred Saga, a deeply imagined fantasy milieu like few others. Be embedded in a medieval dystopia of feuding savage tribes, their petty hedge-kings, and the merchants and brigands that fight to make a living among them, while dark forces awaken in world rich with eldritch sword-and-sorcery adventure.
Companies as diverse as Wolters-Kluwer, McGraw-Hill, Cambridge University Press, Bertelsmann, and Macmillan have employed my services in a variety of editorial, print and digital production, content management, and IT support roles.
Through my experience as a manager of platform development, content distribution systems, XML-First workflows, and digital production environments, I’ve become a successful leader with a deep and intimate knowledge of the business and operational mechanics of publishing.
No, I’m not a robot (yet)
I also enjoy swimming, hiking, the theatre, literary readings, and movies. I volunteer as a water safety instructor and swim coach for the young and young-at-heart. I have two intelligent and independent daughters, and a wonderful little old dog. I live in the Greater New York City Area.
